Cenote Chaak Tun

Explora Caribe Tours

1.5–2.5 hours5 km from PDC (in city) from PDC

An underground cave cenote right inside Playa del Carmen with spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations in crystal-clear water. Named after Chaac, the Maya rain god. Guided tours only.

Cenote Chaak Tun is the closest cave cenote experience to downtown Playa del Carmen, located just 5 kilometers from the city center. Named after Chaac, the ancient Maya god of rain, this underground cenote features spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations in crystal-clear water that feels like swimming inside a natural cathedral.

Unlike most cenotes in the area, Chaak Tun is accessible only through guided tours operated by Explora Caribe Tours. You cannot visit independently. Tours typically last 1.5 to 2.5 hours and include transportation from the meeting point, all necessary equipment (snorkeling gear, life jacket, helmet with lamp), and a knowledgeable guide who explains the geological and cultural significance of the cave system.

The tour begins with a walk through the jungle to the cave entrance, then descends into the underground chambers. The stalactite formations here are some of the most impressive accessible to non-divers in the entire Riviera Maya. Your guide illuminates different sections of the cave, revealing formations that have been growing for thousands of years. The water is chest-deep in most areas and maintains a comfortable temperature.

Snorkeling through the cave passages is the highlight of the experience. With your mask and the light from your helmet, you can see the submerged formations and the play of light through the crystal-clear water. It is an otherworldly experience that feels more like exploring an alien landscape than swimming in Mexico.

Tours cost approximately 700 MXN (about $35 USD) per person for the snorkel tour. Scuba diving packages are also available for certified divers at higher rates. All equipment is included in the price. Booking in advance through the Chaak Tun website is required — walk-up visits are not possible.

Cenote Chaak Tun is an excellent option for families and visitors who want a cave cenote experience without the long drive to Tulum or the Yucatán interior. The guided format ensures safety and provides educational context that enriches the experience. Afternoon tours tend to have warmer water as the sun heats the surface throughout the day.
